La gyre subtropicale de l’Atlantique Nord (NASTG) est au cœur des changements climatiques observés au cours des dernières décennies (1960-2010). On y observe entre la surface, la thermocline principale et le flanc équatorial du Gulf Stream, une augmentation de contenu thermique océanique parmi les plus fortes de l'océan mondial (Levitus et Boyer, 2005, figure 1-A). On observe également au cours du 20ème siècle une modification de la structure du Gulf Stream (GS) qui s'est réchauffé et déplacé vers le pole (Wu et al., 2012, figure 1-B). La concomitance de ces tendances et le fait que courants de bord ouest et thermoclines principales sont intrinsèquement liées, suggère l’existence d’interactions fortes entre la variabilité du GS et la structure thermodynamique du cœur de la NASTG, interactions que nous proposons de caractériser et de comprendre pour enrichir notre diagnostic du changement climatique.
Les données de hauteur de mer mesurées par satellites (AVISO Ssalt/duacs) fournissent des observations de l'intensité et de la position du GS (via les gradients horizontaux) ainsi que de son activité turbulente (via la variabilité locale des anomalies). Les données in-situ du réseau Argo fournissent quant à elles des profils de température et salinité qui permettent de caractériser la structure de la thermocline principale (figure 1-C) et la variabilité thermodynamique de la NASTG. A partir de ces observations nous analyserons les processus susceptibles d'être au cœur des interactions entre le GS et la structure thermodynamique de la NASTG: les processus adiabatiques (liés au vent et à la circulation) qui conduisent à des changements de position des isopycnes et les processus diabatiques (liés au mélange et aux flux de chaleur) qui conduisent à des changements de propriétés des masses d'eau. Les questions fondamentales auxquelles cette thèse devra répondre sont : (i) quel est le rôle joué par les interactions entre le GS et la thermocline dans la variabilité saisonnière à interannuelle de la gyre subtropicale ? (ii) dans quelles mesures ces interactions influencent la manière dont la NASTG répond aux forçages extérieurs ?
Répondre à ces questions nous permettra de mieux comprendre et de séparer le rôle des processus de nature mécanique de ceux de nature diabatique dans la variabilité des gyres subtropicales. Cette séparation pourra servir à valider et améliorer les modèles numériques d'océan utilisés dans les projections climatiques.

Abstract:
The North Atlantic subtropical gyre (NASTG) is front and center in observed climate changes throughout the last decades (19602010). Indeed, it is observed between the surface, the main thermocline and the equatorial flank of the Gulf Stream (GS), one of the most intense increase of oceanic heat content worldwide (Levitus and Boyer, 2005). It is also observed during the 20th century a warming and poleward shift of the GS (Wu et al, 2012). Those overlapping tendencies and the fact that western boundary currents and main thermoclines are intrinsically connected suggest the existence of strong interactions between the variability of the GS and the thermodynamical structure of the NASTG, interactions we propose to characterize and understand to enrich our diagnostic of climate change. It is the main goal of this thesis.
Sea surface height from satellite data (AVISO Ssalto/duacs) provide information about the intensity and position of the GS (through horizontal gradients) as well as about its turbulent activity (through local variability of anomalies). Insitu data from the Argo array, in turn, provide temperature/salinity profiles allowing the characterization of the main thermocline and NASTG thermodynamical variability. Using those observations dataset we will analyze processes possibly responsible for the interactions between the GS and the thermodynamical structure of the NASTG: adiabatic processes (tied to the wind and circulation) leading to isopycnal displacement and diabatic processes (tied to mixing and heat fluxes) leading to water mass property changes. The fundamental questions this thesis is intended to answer are: (i) what is the role of GS/mainthermocline interactions in the seasonal and interannual variability of the subtropical gyre ? (ii) to which extent those interactions influence how the NASTG responds to external forcings ?
Answering those questions will allow for a better understanding of the respective roles of mechanic vs diabatic processes in the variability of subtropical gyres. This distinction could be used to validate and improve ocean models used in climatic projections.
